This is especially important for folks in the 3D industry who rely on NVIDIA's CUDA system - something currently unsupported in any Mac available on the market today. Plug in an enclosure via a Thunderbolt 3 cable and voilà you've got desktop-class graphics performance for your slim MacBook.

That led to the new MacBook Pro being equipped with the latest AMD GPUs, even if there were doubly-more-powerful NVIDIA chips available.īut there's another option, at least in theory: the external GPU. There are always tradeoffs to make, and Apple tends to err on the side of battery life and heat management over raw performance. There's no denying that graphics performance in current Macs isn't the best. What you need to know about the Mac, Thunderbolt 3, and external GPUs The eGPU kit allows you to connect an HTC Vive VR headset to your Mac running macOS High Sierra for virtual reality game and application development.

I wish all video cards were natively produced for Windows and/or Mac, meaning they had full boot menu support as well as full driver support.Apple wants developers to be onboard with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) development and has released a cost-effective external graphics processing unit (eGPU) to help with just that.

You can't install the driver ahead of time because its not supported by the current OS and yet you video craps out once you do the installation until you install the updated driver.

Had to revert back to the ATI Radeon 5770 it came with until NVIDIA releases an updated driver.

Yeah I accidentally ran the Security update on my 2012 Mac Pro and forgot I had the NVIDIA 970 installed.

I can and do use the nVidia web drivers as well as the kernel hack, but they need to be manually updated each dot release. Why should they care which EGPU somebody uses? Blackmagic eGPU and Blackmagic eGPU Pro users who also own a Pro Display XDR can today download a new version 1.2 firmware update thats designed to introduce support for the Apple Pro Display XDR. One display was plugged into the thunderbolt port on the second display and then that display was plugged into a Blackmagic Pro eGPU (Vega 56) with the same thunderbolt to USBC dongle. One display was plugged directly into the right side of the MBP. Powerful yet pint-sized, Apple is flaunting that its Blackmagic eGPU is powerful enough to provide up to 2.8x faster performance on its latest 15-inch MacBook Pro models, as well as up to 8x faster. Apple opened up 10.13.4 a very little with slightly wider AMD card support, and way better Vega drivers - but there is nothing suggesting so-annointed nVidia card support, even with the web drivers that nVidia has for PCI-E cards.Īnd that's the rub- they need to be "agnostic" about graphics cards- or at least vendors- the way Microsoft is. I was running 3 x 27' Apple thunderbolt screens with apple thunderbolt to USBC dongles. I would very much like to see this as well, but I am concerned that there will be "blessed" configurations. Looking forward to the nVidia support that won't require the kernel hack to use it with either a laptop or a desktop system. Apple has announced that support for external GPUs will be fully supported in the spring. Today Apple released macOS 10.13.4 to the public, bringing official external graphics support to the Mac.Apple has published a new document to help users navigate the ins and outs of eGPU support.

Many were disappointed by Apple’s apparent decision to abandon the display market in favor of recommending LG models. The feature, while present in all High Sierra builds, is still considered a beta. Opinion: An Apple display with built-in eGPU could be a smart move right now. With the new release, Clamshell mode implements properly on lid-shut, even with a workspace spanning the MacBook Pro's internal display in conjunction with external displays.ĪppleInsider has tested the improvements and new functionality on the Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Puck with RX 560, the Sonnet and AMD RX 580 developer's kit that Apple briefly sold during the initial beta releases of High Sierra, and the Mantiz MZ-02 with a Vega 56 PCI-E card.Īpple's support for external Thunderbolt 3 enclosures containing a PCI-E GPU began following the 2017 WWDC. However, if you had two workplaces, the workspace on the MacBook Pro's screen would remain active, even with the lid shut. If the displays were mirrored to begin with, if you shut the lid on a MacBook Pro it would turn off that display. Rather, it connects automatically, and shifts to the previous configuration.īefore High Sierra 10.13.4, clamshell mode was partially implemented. It’s only available on systems with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, and it has some frustrating teething problems. Under the new beta, an external GPU can be connected while the machine is running, and it will not pop up a notification to logout to enable the GPU. Apple brought eGPU support to macOS with High Sierra, which rolled out last September.
